Yohji Yamamoto x Isamu Katayama

Leather jackets have remained a staple in Yohji Yamamoto’s collections for years. This season the Japanese designer turned to one of the country best known leatherworkers, Isamu Katayama. The head of his own rock inspired label named Backlash,Katayama is Yohji’s later collaborator. The collaboration includes several colored leathers, in the style of a double rider and a cleaner colored bike jacket. The leathers bear Katayama’s signature creased, washed finishes to give the pieces a worn-in look and a snug fit. Yohji Yamamoto FW18 Collection

Yohji’s presence in fashion has spanned decades but remarkably his consistentcy and relevance has remained in-tact. As fashion has embraced a wider fit, his signature designs fit perfectly into the current zeitgeist. The Fall/Winter 2018 collection shown in Paris exemplifies a breadth of looks, often pulling designs from the archives and embedding them with new life and color. Many prints were developed just for this collection that include Artwork, Japanese Kanji and even drawn illustrations of the designer himself. Also noteworthy is the inclusion of indigo and deep red color-blocking throughout the collection. We’re certainly blessed to continue to have Yohji contribute new collections even at the age of 74 and long-time fans of his designers should find plenty here to lust after. Look for pieces to start releasing in stockists like Farfetch in the next few months.

Idol Brooklyn Yohji Yamamoto FW16 Editorial

Idol Brooklyn gears up for fall with a new editorial presenting pieces from Yohji Yamamoto’s Fall/Winter 2016 collection. Shot in Williamsburg near the store’s location, the shoot highlights key pieces including a down-filled nylon parka, padded wool long coat and oversized graphic tees.

SSENSE Japanese Menswear in Motion Video

Y’s Yohji Yamamoto Adidas Superstar

In grade school all I wore were Adidas shelltoes. I had a bunch of pairs in different colors and the sneaker still holds a special place in my heart. Adidas Originals teamed up with Yohji Yamamoto for this special model of the Superstar, dubbed the Y’s Super Position. The hard shelltoe is gone replaced by a smooth leather toebox. The zig-zag seams feature loose thread that can be left to drag and fray or cut entirely.

Available in a black and white colorway you can find these August 10th at Y’s stores Tokyo, No. 6 London, No. 74 Berlin, No. 42 Paris, and select boutiques worldwide.

Adidas Y-3 FW13

This was the first Y-3 show I’ve had the pleasure of seeing in person. The location was an abandoned factory space in the lower east side which provided a historical contrast from this futurist sportswear by Yohji Yamamoto. In the collection there’s pretty straight on takes on sportswear staples such as track jackets and sneakers but my favorite pieces were the ones that blended signature Yohji shapes with synthetic materials and minimal Y-3 branding.
