NEPENTHES FW14 “MERKMAL” Editorial

NEPENTHES has had a great track record with their editorials and they keep the streak going with this Fall/Winter 2014 editorial ‘Merkmal’. As always their aesthetic is carefully crafted and harmoniously blends together their family. The shoot directed by Keita Izuka incorporates the Engineered Garments, Needles, Sonic Lab and South2 West8.  Check out more images from the editorial and see it paired with sound over on the NEPENTHES blog.

Engineered Garments FW13 in The New Order Magazine Vol.9

I haven’t had the chance to check out The New Order Magazine Vol.9 for myself yet, but I did come across this editorial featuring garments from EG Fw13 and some familiar faces from the Nepenthes camp. I really like the casual photo style here and the inclusion of both louder patterned items with more subtle gear. The magazine cover story is a feature on Jun Takahashi so it seems like the latest volume of the publication is well worth purchasing.

NEPENTHES FW13 Editorial ‘With Morgan’

NEPENTHES has consistently brought strong visual presentation to the table to accompany each season’s selections. The latest from the Japanese retailer is this editorial entitled ‘With Morgan’. There’s a general mood of exploration and nature throughout these photos. NEPENTHES vintage references are clearly on display in the selection of items which include denim shirts, mohair sweaters and patterned blazers.

More detail shots from this editorial can be seen on the NEPENTHES website. The images are divided into 6 themes: cloudly, haze, horses, forest, grass and fields.

The “Restless East” Editorial by Rick Genest

HYPEBEAST produced this editorial in collaboration with Zomby Boy ‘Rick Genest’. An inspiration for the shoot was the Jiangshi (think the undead) identity within Asian folklore. The cityscape of Hong Kong plays it’s role as a gritty urban backdrop against the plush luxurious pieces from 3.1 Phillip Lim, ETRO and Burberry Prosum that Genest wears. Also should mention that the cameo appearance by a very cute baby makes this editorial more memorable than most.

11 by Boris Bidjan Saberi AW13

Spanish based Boris Bidjan Saberi is known for his raw industrial aesthetic. Often BBS garments undergo many unconventional treatments (he’s experiment with  tar, transparent leather and even pig-blood-dyes for example) which set his pieces apart from most men’s brands. The ’11’ line is a more affordable, street-ready version of his trademark vision. The pieces are a standard mix of graphic t-shirts, hoodies, and accessories which come in at a much lower price-point than his mainline and made from hard-wearing durable materials like heavy denim and thick canvas.

Oki-Ni just posted a selection of the goods including a range of phone cases, duffles and backpacks that resulted from a collaboration with German technical fabric specialist Ortlieb. Those guys value utilitarianism in design will want to check out this accessories range in particular. The duffle is made with thick PVC and canvas that is both waterproof and durable. The mountain backpack  features two internal pockets  and has a padded back-piece and shoulder straps, for a comfortable and well ventilated fit .The ‘Safe It’ iPhone holder also crafted from waterproof PVC has one clear side, allowing the wearer to view their phone’s screen. The holder has a rolled Velcro closure and an adjustable lanyard  that can be worn around the neck.

Third Looks Editorial: Am I Supposed to Change

Joey wears Gucci hat, Versace sports tee, Polo Black Label jeans, silver Jordan 1s, Kenzo iPhone case

Bradley wears Louis Vuitton Beanie, Bradley Garret Leigh Sunglasses and aNYthing T-shirt

Many of us who grew up in the 90s look to the years just before 9/11 with a certain reverence. There was a feeling of naivety growing up in that seemingly utopic time, a feeling of youthful confidence expressed through personal style. Most of us wore variations of the same gear: backpacks, jerseys, hoodies, t-shirts and jeans. The differences in design were subtle from piece to piece, but it was the brand names (and their associations) that set items apart. Looking back at how we dressed through that period, there is certainly an element of disgust and regret, but we cannot deny that underlying layer of nostalgia, that feeling we had rocking the gear the first time around.

We’d mix mall labels with sneakers and covet luxury items that were unattainable status symbols. Brands were more than a representation of taste or quality, they could provide a sense of belonging; entrance into a cooler world. This is an emotion that new labels unabashedly evoke in 2013. Consider this editorial an ode to unsubtle branding and the powerful impact it continues to have on fashion.

 Stylist’s note

“I was going through a mallrat-eurotrash-pinoy-guido phase in 2001, 16-17 years old wearing all sorts of goofy logo-heavy shit meanwhile tapering my eyebrows, lining up my non-existent sideburns, spiking my hair, etc. Strangely, I was voted best dressed junior year of high school in Berlin…? Of all the prodigies at the time, Aaliyah sticks out most in my mind. In particular, Red Album Aaliyah in the We Need A Resolution video dancing on a virtual stage, wearing a loud silver D&G monogram belt—a belt I subsequently became obsessed with. When I moved to New York in 2002 and finally had access to ebay, I went HAM, scoring a knockoff DG belt which I proudly wore with a pair of real D&G bleached- washed elastic jeans. Same year I bought some Burberry fabric to sew on my AF1s. Over a decade later, Rocky and I shot this with friends in celebration of my 28th birthday.
