Supreme FW13 Lookbook and Collection

New York based skate/streetwear giant Supreme returns with their Fall/Winter 2013 collection. As someone who’s been tracking and wearing the brand for many years, I have to say that recent collections have been quite a disappointment to me. As the brand has increased it’s presence both it’s online store, new London location and a stream of high-profile celebrity endorsements, it’s also felt the pressure to adapt more to current market trends and also produce more items to meet demand. At this point, I’m not really interested in just another fitted or hoody with Supreme written on it. Most disappointedly are the pieces which seem to be influenced by the current web culture through the use of nostalgic graphics (that Blingee style hate graphic and the Indian ‘hanu’ design come to mind). Also surprising was the release of a stadium jacket which appears to be a real collaboration with Wise potato chips. Somehow I doubt the brand would have ever considered this move five years ago. It’s this ability to ‘cover all bases’ that makes Supreme such a viable, iconic brand but perhaps in increasing the range, they’ve lost a bit of what made the brand so special in the first place.

Supreme is always an interesting case study as it is still fun to sift through each release. The brand remains a great barometer of where men’s fashion (not just streetwear) is at during a particular point in time. My favorite pieces from the brand in the past were generally ones where the branding was a bit more subversive or otherwise low-key. Pieces like this are few and far between this time out but there are still some gems in here that are worth the reasonable price of admission (Supreme still has a pretty fair pricepoint for the quality all things considered). There are a couple noteworthy collaborations with Champion and Schott and I’m sure that more will be announced in the coming weeks. That being said there are always a few items in each collection worth coveting, I’ve made a selection of my personal favorites and posted them below after the jump. Y’s Yohji Yamamoto Adidas Superstar

In grade school all I wore were Adidas shelltoes. I had a bunch of pairs in different colors and the sneaker still holds a special place in my heart. Adidas Originals teamed up with Yohji Yamamoto for this special model of the Superstar, dubbed the Y’s Super Position. The hard shelltoe is gone replaced by a smooth leather toebox. The zig-zag seams feature loose thread that can be left to drag and fray or cut entirely.

Available in a black and white colorway you can find these August 10th at Y’s stores Tokyo, No. 6 London, No. 74 Berlin, No. 42 Paris, and select boutiques worldwide.

11 by Boris Bidjan Saberi AW13

Spanish based Boris Bidjan Saberi is known for his raw industrial aesthetic. Often BBS garments undergo many unconventional treatments (he’s experiment with  tar, transparent leather and even pig-blood-dyes for example) which set his pieces apart from most men’s brands. The ’11’ line is a more affordable, street-ready version of his trademark vision. The pieces are a standard mix of graphic t-shirts, hoodies, and accessories which come in at a much lower price-point than his mainline and made from hard-wearing durable materials like heavy denim and thick canvas.

Oki-Ni just posted a selection of the goods including a range of phone cases, duffles and backpacks that resulted from a collaboration with German technical fabric specialist Ortlieb. Those guys value utilitarianism in design will want to check out this accessories range in particular. The duffle is made with thick PVC and canvas that is both waterproof and durable. The mountain backpack  features two internal pockets  and has a padded back-piece and shoulder straps, for a comfortable and well ventilated fit .The ‘Safe It’ iPhone holder also crafted from waterproof PVC has one clear side, allowing the wearer to view their phone’s screen. The holder has a rolled Velcro closure and an adjustable lanyard  that can be worn around the neck.

Air Max 95 (London) Hometurf Pack QS

Being that it’s summer I was in the market for a new mesh sneaker to rock. I wasn’t into Air Max 95s growing up but they’ve grown on me in recent years. This being my first pair of 95s, I found them incredibly comfortable and this colorway is one of the favorite iterations I’ve seen in this model. The gradient on these almost feels like a hand-painted custom as there’s no visible stitching between the grays (due to the hyperfuse construction). The finishing touch is the custom tag on the tongue and the striped pattern on the inside of the sneaker.

I was a bit late getting these, but they’re part of the Hometurf Pack and take cues from the colors of the London transportation system.  Look out for more summer sneaker coverage on the site very soon.
