I snapped these photos of White Gallery at their show last Friday. The band opened for Light Asylum to a packed house at Steel Drums in Bushwick. Photos by Rocky Li
New York based White Gallery is playing a couple shows coming up. Through my friends in the band I’ve had the opportunity to preview tracks from their upcoming EP and I can’t wait to see them live for the first time. Their sound is difficult to describe but as soon as I heard ‘Twisted Summer’ … Read more
I read the clickbait-y ‘Can an Asian Woman Be Taken Seriously in Rap?‘ article on The Cut introducing Awkafina. Government name Nora Lum, she is a New York based rapper/producer who I was going to write off due to the comparison to Childish Gambino (Who I can’t cosign under any circumstances). After giving a few … Read more
Hefna Gwap is a rapper from East Palo Alto california. Founder of the Elegant Caviar Group and a Smokers Club member, he made the move from the Bay to New York last year to push his music to the next level. I caught up with Hef at a recording session late last week at Premier Studios.
How was the whole process of moving to New York? What brings you here?
First off, I have two daughters. Everything I rap about I was doing it. I was selling dope and running in houses and robbing and shit. I had my first daughter (she’s two now). When I had my second daughter, it was a wake-up call. Alot of my close friends started getting killed or going to jail. Alot of people I shot videos for, alot of the people I was editing videos for got killed. Some of the people’s videos I was editing , they got killed right after I moved to New York in October. I was happy to leave, I did alot and I didn’t want to do that type of shit any more.

Whiz Limited showed this strong Fall/Winter 2013 collection at Tokyo Fashion Week. I only became aware of the brand last season but they have existed for over a decade now. Brand founder Hiroaki Shitano has assembled a collection that is colorful, relevant and wearable. The collection is largely comprised of shades of blues, reds and blacks. The stark colors are balanced out by an array of patterns : stripes, checkers and plaids. All the core items a guy could want are here and done in style: Knits, Waterproof shell,s MA-1 bombers, Harrington Jackets, and blazers, wool overcoats. There are pieces for the attention-seekers amongst us but also there are plenty of understated pieces for those who prefer to stay low key. This is a collection I’ll be looking at again and again, and coveting once it hits stores.

We covered the Spring/Summer 2013 lookbook earlier this year, but this Men’s Non-No editorial really nails the feeling of the collection .Set against a psychedelic forest back-drop , the looks here really capture the eclectic mix of slouchy tailored pieces, streetwear and mountaineering inspired outerwear; all laced with that familar Jun Takahashi punk edge. The second look in … Read more
The prestigious Gagosian Gallery in Chelsea is exhibiting “Jean-Michel Basquiat”, a collection of 59 works by the iconic artist. If you are at all interested in Basquiat’s work, I highly recommend you go see this show for yourself. On hand are a comphrensive collection of Basquiat’s paintings that range from his early works (including one that was painted on a fence) to his late life. I read a review of the show on New York Times and I thought art critic Ken Johnson nicely articulated the lasting appeal of Basquiat’s work.
“For all its bristling fury Basquiat’s art remains engaging and likable. It is not overbearing, withholding or offensive but visually generous, materially sumptuous and entertaining. There is an eager-to-please vulnerability that gives it a bittersweet emotional complexity.”
Whether or not you are able to go to the gallery, I would cite the 2011 film documentary “The Radiant Child” as required viewing for anyone with an interest in Jean-Michel’s life and art.
The show continues through April 6 at the Gagosian Gallery, 555 West 24th Street, Chelsea.
Yesterday marked the final day of the exhibition Larry Clark’s Stuff at Milk Studios Gallery curated by Boo Hurray. The space was a bit homage to the life and work of the controversial Clark , best known for his filmmaking (Kids, Bully, Wassup Rockers) and voyeuristic photography. On display were an array of photos, movie posters, streetwear tees and decks by the likes of Fuct, Supreme, Toy Machine.
